Abstract:

A man with metastatic carcinoma of the colon had a bone scan which revealed urinary retention in the left kidney. Ten months later, a Tc-99m-DTPA renai glomerular study showed the left kidney to have only 8% of total renal function. Fifteen months after that, (he same kidney demonstrated 9% of total function, while the right kidney had evolving obstruction due to his neoplasm. The case shows that loss of a significant amount of renal activity can occur over relatively short intervals, but that a small degree of functional activity can persist.

A Rare Case of Intestinal Obstruction due to Taenia Saginata

Intestinal obstruction may be duo to various mechanical or functional reasons. Worms, especially Ascaris worms are one of the mechanical reasons of intestinal obstruction. Obstruction due to Taenia saginata is a rare phenomenon. Here we report a case of intestinal obstruction due to Taenia saginata infection in a 30 year-old male patient undergoing laparatomy with the diagnosis of intestinal ob...

Assessment of the individual renal function in chronic unilateral renal obstruction using functional CT as compared to 99mTc-DTPA renal scan

Introduction: The selection of   optimal treatment of obstructive nephrouropathy requires information about the functional status of each kidney. Nuclear renal scanning objectively measure differential renal function, multiple studies have demonstrated the role of assessment of renal perfusion and GFR with triphasic CT. The aim of this study is to assess the role of CT based on renal parenchyma...

Predictors of residual renal function loss in peritoneal dialysis: is previous renal transplantation a risk factor?

Preservation of residual renal function (RRF) is an important goal in peritoneal dialysis (PD). The present study explored the factors conditioning RRF decline in a PD population. We studied 148 consecutive patients. Age, sex, diabetes, previous renal replacement therapy time and modality [hemodialysis (HD), renal transplantation (RT), or PD first], peritoneal transport, PD prescription [automa...

Late renal failure due to prostatic outflow obstruction.

Nineteen patients presenting with late renal failure due to prostatic outflow obstruction (mean age 68.7 years; mean serum creatinine concentration 1158 mumol/l) were identified from the admission records of two renal units. As late renal failure secondary to prostatic enlargement is preventable case records were analysed retrospectively in an attempt to identify aspects of management in which ...

Biliary Tract Obstruction Due to Fasciola hepatica Managed by ERCP

Fascioliasis is a health problem in several countries including the Islamic Republic of Iran.  In a review of the medical publications during 1990-2002, only 22 cases of biliary tract obstruction by fasciola hepatica have been reported.  Herein, we are adding a new case of fasciola hepatica causing bile duct obstruction and presenting with intermittent colicky pain, eosinophilia and bile duct d...
